CALIFORNIA ARBORETUM FOUNDATION LECTURE SERIES "REPORT ON INDIA" Friday, March 26, 1965 Climaxing the Arboretum winter lecture series, Director William S, Stewart will give his "Report On India" on Friday evening, March 26th at eight o'clock. Dr. Stewart has just returned from a five-month term as Fulbright Lecturer at Balwant Rajput College » He and his family lived in the faculty colony in the country about eight miles from Agra, They spent frequent vacation periods on plant-collecting trips through the Himalayas and visiting Botanical Gardens throughout India and Ceylon. In addition to lecturing at various institutions on Botany and Plant Physiology, Dr. Stewart served as adviser to the new college Botanical Garden and as consultant on the expansion of the promising citrus industry of the region. "Fascinating, colorful, and completely different" is the way he describes his experiences. The meeting will be held in the Lecture Hall where colored slides will be shown, not only of botanical subjects but also views reflecting rural and city life of India and particularly the many moods of the magnificent Taj Mahal in Agra. LASCA mWS AUGUST, 1965 1965-66 LECTURE 5EBIES "PLMT COLLECTING IN THE MDES OF PERU" with Mr. Paul Hutchison, Senior Botanist at the Botanical Gardens of the University of California at Berkeley, will be the first lecture sponsored by the Foundation on September 1?, I965, 8:00 P. M. , in the Lecture Hall at the Arboretuin. This lecture will be illustrated with colored slides taken by Mr. Hutchison during his travels into remote areas of Chile, Peru and Bolivia. In I963 through 196^, Mr. Hutchison was Director of the University of California Botanical Garden's Seventh Expedition to the Andes, collecting some ^,^00 plants, 30,000 herbarium specimens, besides seeds, living plants and bulbs. This trip was financially supported by donations from various groups, including California Arboretum Foundation, Inc. These cards are especially suitable, either imprinted or not, for Christmas greetings and should be ordered as soon as possible to assure delivery in ample time before the holiday season. BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING September 21 ^ I965 MINUTES INTRODUCTION OF NEW TRUSTEES AND GUESTS A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of California Arboretum Foundation, Inc. was held on September 21 st^ I965 in the Lecture Hall of the Arboretum; following dinner in the Home Demonstration Gardens with executives of the Southern California Gas Company, Southern Counties Gas Company and the editors of the San Gabriel Valley Newspapers. Minutes of the Board of Trustees Meeting of May 18, I965 and Executive Committee Meetings of June 7, July 12, August 8 and September 13th were approved as mailed. Mr. Roach welcomed the Board members and introduced Mrs. John Gregg and Mrs. Manfred Meyberg as new Trustees. Mr. and Mrs. John Oldham from Perth, West Australia, were the special guests of Dr. and Mrs. Stewart. In the absence of the Treasurer, Mrs. Hubbell gave a detailed report of the financial status of the Foundation. The report was ordered filed for audit, Mrs. Richard Dakin, co-chairman of the Historical Committee, reported that changes in the set-up of the historical section were being considered. She also touched on the possibility of moving the old Santa Anita Station to the Hugo Reid area, to be used for exhibits and an auxillaiy gatehouse. Chairman Dr. Ayres reported on the Horticultural Advisory Committee activities. A meeting of this committee is scheduled for September 29th in the Seminar Room of the Arboretum. Dr. Ayres reported on a meeting held with Los Angeles Beautiful and of the plans for reprinting the Flowering Tree Booklet and a first printing of the Flowering Shrub Booklet. Negotiations were being discussed with an underwriter for the publication of the Flower- ing Shrub Booklet. If this financial arrangement is consumated it would be of great benefit to the Foundation and the Flowering Tree Book Project. Mr. Bodger reporting for the Sales Committee informed the audience of the Foundation Book Shop inventory, stating that 127 items were for sale. He called attention to the four new designs of the Meckel Correspondence Cards and mentioned that two of the designs were especially suitable for Christmas Greeting Cards. He said the Foundation 'Peacock Pavilion Build- ing Fund» had now accumulated to approximately $19 j 000. 00 and since we now have lees than a year to raise the necessary funds BOARD OF TRUSTEE MEETING -2- Sept ember 21, I965 DIRECTOR** S REPORT MR. CORNELL VOLUNTEERS to construct this proposed building, this project should have first priority for fund raising. Mr. Edward Huntsman-Trout reviewed the progress of the Entranceway Development and stated that this undertaking needed additional plantings and other work to reach completion as set forth in the Master Plans. Dr. Stewart reported on the following items; 1. Garden Club of America, September issue, had an article on the Arboretum. 2. An invitation had been received to attend the dedication of Kings Park Botanic Gardens. 3. The fall sessions of the Adult Education classes were starting at the Arboretum and Descanso Gardens. k. Also, school tours were starting this week. 5. The Cast Hibiscus Research was in progress. 6. The Camellia Research was continuing. 7. The Gossypium Research Grant from the National Science Foundation is in progress under the supervision of Dr. Clifford Parks. A Spectrophoto- meter has been purchased. Dr. Stewart had a sample to show of the work produced by this machine. 8. Announced various activities of the present and the future being held at the Arboretum, South Coast and Descanso Gardens. Mr. Roach asked for any comments, suggestions or remarks and Mr. Cornell addressed the members with some further comments regarding the Entranceway Development. Mr. Roach informed the Board that more active committees were needed in the Foundation and asked for volunteers to work on these committees. Meeting adjourned at 9s ^5 P.M. Members and guests will convene in the Lecture Hall at 9s 30 a.m. and meet Mrs. Maida Boyle, Associate Curator, who will conduct a special tour through the Historical area of the Arboretum. This is a very outstanding section of the Arboretum and both old and new members and guests will find the historical background of the Hugo Reid Adobe, the Queen Anne Cottage and the Carriage House most interesting and informative.
